in the deep

So, I#8217;ve just finished watching Finding Nemo for the millionth time, it#8217;s been ages since I saw it last, I really forgot how good it was, I don#8217;t know if it was PMT but I spent a good half of the film with tears running down my cheeks, the other half was spent trying not to fall off the sofa as I was laughing so hard.

Another thing I#8217;d forgotten was how much I hate sharks, I have a bit of a shark phobia. Well, it#8217;s not really a phobia, because that#8217;s an irrational fear, the fear of sharks is perfectly reasonable although incredibly unlikely to happen sharks can and have eaten people, so I think my fear is valid, anyway I was totally freaked out by Bruce, the great white for those of who aren#8217;t as familiar with Nemo as myself, even when he was being friendly and probably more importantly even though he#8217;s a cartoon. My fear has defiantly got worse a few years ago I could happily watch sharks frolicking in the big blue, chomping on baby dolphins that sort of thing now I can#8217;t even watch a friendly cartoon shark, I would never set toe to water in countries where you get the big ones, we get something pathetic like 2 types of shark in British waters, basking sharks, which don#8217;t even deserve the name shark they#8217;re like whales really, well except for being a fish, and some piddley little 1 foot long things that don#8217;t eat anything bigger than a baby prawn. So I don#8217;t mind body boarding off Cornwall but forget somewhere like Miami Beach.

Stratton Family Happenings: How to Make a Worm Farm- A great …

I teach a Cub Scout Den each week, and this month our theme was Leave Nothing but Footprints. An activity that we did was on making a Worm Farm. This is not only a great activity for scouts but for your kids at home as well. It is not only fun, but it also teaches them a good use for recycling kitchen scraps, and creates some great fertilizer for your garden.

How to Make a Worm Farm

Worm Farm Materials:
1. Container, such as a large bucket or plastic box -I found some great buckets at the 99 cent store by Target.
2. Noncolored newspaper (torn in 1 inch strips)
3. Small screened wire
4. Vegetable scraps (lettuce, eggshells, and coffee grounds work nicely)
5. Piece of burlap
6. Earthworms (you can purchase these from Wal Mart in the sporting section)
7. Soil -(I picked up a bag of potting soil at the Dollar store by the movie theatre, or you can use soil from your back yard or garden)

Instructions:
Create a bed of materials for worms to digest by layering shredded newspaper, handfuls of soil and table scraps. Cover with more layers of newpaper. An 8 inch layer of material is a good start. Moisten the contents of the bucket and place the worms in the bucket. . Place a piece of burlap on top to keep the light out and the soil moist. Place the small screened wire on top of the burlap, to keep the worms from crawling out. :) Feed every 2 weeks. If you have problems with your worm farm, you can find lots of information on the Internet on how to make worm farms. Just Google Worm Farm, and I am sure you will find all the information you need.

What happens? The worms eat through the material you prepared in the bucket. The by-product is an enriched soil you can use in your garden. You are also finding a good use for kitchen waste as you recycle. Just be sure to keep the mixture moist and add table scraps to help feed the worms. Have fun!!!

Numbers Not Invited: Couch hunting is a very popular sport

Ladies and gentleman, I present to you (drum roll please) our new couch and chair:
Description as stated online:

  • Covered in a sumptuous, chocolate chenille.
  • Hardwood frame rests on beautifully shaped tri-leg bun feet.
  • Three overstuffed, detached back cushions and reversible seat cushions ensure the longevity of the sofa.
  • The 5 accent pillows consist of 3 brown and 2 light turquoise designs.
  • The low, rolled arm and low-profile frame create smooth, clean lines.
  • Coordinating Loveseat, Chair and Ottoman also available.
  • The extra long sofa measures: 97″ Wide, 44″ Deep and 38″ High

This chair feels like laying in a poofy cloud. It is almost just as big as the loveseat and when you push the ottoman up to it, it’s like a mini bed. Absolute heaven…

var gaJsHost = ((“https:” == document.location.protocol) ? “https://ssl.” : “http://www.”);
document.write(unescape(“”));

try {
var pageTracker = _gat._getTracker(“UA-6865132-2″);
pageTracker._trackPageview();
} catch(err) {}
So, after measuring our living room last night we decided to go with just the extra long sofa and the over-sized comfy chair and ottoman. I know opting out of the loveseat is a tad untraditional – but we don’t want to clutter the space with too much furniture – and just getting the sofa and the chair will really fit and work for our space. The salesman did say that this set is completely out of stock until May 6, so we wouldn’t have it in the house for another couple of weeks…womp, womp.

That being said, here is what the matching loveseat looks like:
What would you do? Go with the sofa and loveseat? Or choose the sofa and comfy chair? No purchases have been made yet (these pictures are simply the product of three and a half hours spent at Value City Furniture last night trying to pick a couch out!) I would love your input!
Oh…did I mention the couch and chair will be compliments of Muddah and Faddah!? Thanks Mom amp; Dad!
Let me know what you think in a comment or an email!
xo,
Bridget Marie

Greenwich Roundup: Those In The Know Are Not Fully Informed Untill …

Greenwich Gossip: More Blight Comes to Greenwich Avenue
By Bill Clark
Greenwich Avenue is getting uglier by the day, it seems. Today your scribe noticed that 353 Greenwich Avenue, the former home of the popular Bon Ton Fish Market, is all boarded up with a bright red STOP WORK order nailed on the front.

Eye on Greenwich Connecticut: This Weeks Email…

A German’s point of View ~Food for Thought

This is by far the best explanation of the Muslim terrorist situation I have ever read. His references to past history are accurate and clear.

Not long, easy to understand and well worth the read…….

A Traveler Becomes a Tourist:: Marriott World Center Orlando, Florida

Well, I’m usually not one to embrace the mega tourist traps of the world. In fact, if I visit a city known for its tourism I will usually make a point of heading straight to some hole in the wall dive and asking the locals what I should do with my time. This usually allows for a good mix of what the books tell you to do along with seeing what’s really special about the place in the eyes of those who live there. Well, this past week I found myself in sunny Orlando Florida. Now, I’ve been to Florida numerous times in the past few years and have had many great experiences with my local friends from the area. In fact, I’ve traveled to Orlando many times with not a thought in my head about a mouse, a whale, or a roller coaster for that matter. I usually spend my time in Florida taking in the weather, playing bags with my buddies and the neighbors, BBQ’ing and smoking cigars (as I always do) with a cold beer or nice cocktail. This trip was to be something different. I was headed to Orlando for a convention for work. The food would be provided by the hotel (read generic buffet) and my time would be mostly programmed. We even had a day at Universal Studios. There’s nothing like spending a miserably hot day at a Theme Park with a few thousand independent pharmacists and their families! Needless to say I was a little sceptical about what this trip would be like but I made a choice to embrace it and go with the touristy flow. The one redeeming factor was the beautiful golf course, Hawk’s Landing, that I knew the resort had. I may not be a good golfer but I do enjoy playing as much as I can. I had one mission for this trip – play a round of golf.

Our adventure started on Wednesday July 23rd. We had an 8am flight on Sun Country from Minneapolis to Orlando. Now, here was my first issue. I HATE Sun Country and all these smaller airlines (and most American airlines for that matter). While they have done a wonderful job of making air travel more accessible to the average person, they do it by sacrificing any ounce of comfort (or dignity) you may have had before you boarded that plane. It’s bad enough that you sit cramped in some terminal for over an hour because we have to get there early enough to disrobe and be security checked by someone as dedicated to their job as the average highschooler working at a fast food joint (probably earning about as much to do something so important as well). When we do board the plane the staff is courteous and everyone seems to be adhering to the old adage of, “service with a smile”. I find this pleasant enough until I attempt to sit down and realize they obviously thought I was going to lose 2 inches and 20 pounds before I traveled with them. Let’s just say I ain’t the smallest guy. I’m not huge by any means but I felt like I was in a coffin. That’s never a good feeling when you’re getting ready to travel 40,000 feet above the earth at ridiculous speeds! We took off on time without any issue. On our flight we were served a warm (I use the term loosely) breakfast sandwhich I believe was supposed to be a sausage, egg, and cheese biscuit. It didn’t give me gut rot. That’s the best I can say about that. Of course, you’re probably thinking, “Well if you’re that picky just don’t eat the damned thing!” Thought never crossed my mind. The rest of the flight I was fairly comfortable in my cramped little space. We got to Orlando a little early and all luggage was quickly retrieved.
We were told to meet the shuttle drivers right at baggage claim. They would be holding signs alerting us to where to go. We were also told that no money was necessary. Just hand the driver your ticket. All gratuities were taken care of. We found the driver and some work aquaintances we knew and were quickly off to the resort on a large touring bus. I will say, this was a nice way to be shuttled to the hotel and not having to think about the cost or a tip was very relaxing. I think being a conventioner is starting to grow on me! We got to the hotel about 15 minutes later. The ride over was comfortable and care-free. We spent the time catching up with the people we’d run into. As we turned into the property we could see what looked like a beautiful golf course. Now I knew I had to play a round. At the hotel we were greeted outside and welcomed as guests of the convention. We were escorted inside to the front desk where check-in was fast and courteous. The lobby was beautiful, clean, and quiet. The resort seemed to have a good mix of business amenities with what looked like a great pool and activites for the kids as well. The outdoor pool area was huge with a waterslide, grotto style hot tub, and waterfalls. The hotel lobby bar seemed inviting with a lot of staff and comfortable couches and chairs with coffee tables and also hightops. There was also a nice smoking patio right off the bar overlooking the pool area that looked perfect for a cigar and some reflection.
Our room was pretty basic but spacious with two queen pillowtop beds, a desk, couch and a patio. The closet doors were mirrored to allow for total outfit viewing and the bathroom was a double vanity large enough for my roomate and I to lay out our dopp kits. We immediately decided to make a tee time at the course and were able to do so for that day. The rate was $59 for 18 holes and $39 for club rental of Calloways. Well, storms formed a a hard rain fell with lightning so we couldn’t golf but the storm dissipated and left nothing but sunshine and a few hours to hit the pool. While everything was still wet around the pool the hotel staff worked extremely fast to get everything cleaned up and ready for the rest of the day. I was impressed with the way they worked. The pool and hot tub were nice and clean and big enough to allow for adults to enjoy while children played as well. Later that eve we met up with friends and had a drink in the lobby bar. Prices were high, but expected for a hotel bar. The mojitos were refreshing but a bit sweet. The use of fresh mint muddled to order was nice and made me forget about the price. My roomate and I headed out for a cigar. I smoked an Oliva Series V lancero with a mojito and found they paired very well together in the Florida heat. the patio shielded us from the sun and the furniture was comfortable.
That night we headed to Downtown Disney for dinner. I know I said I hate tourist traps but there’s one place I always visit when in Orlando – The Raglan Road. It’s one of Disney’s theme restaurants that’s an Irish pub complete with an Irish band and traditional folk dancer from Ireland. You can’t understand a word they say/sing but I just love the music and the feeling in that place. The food’s pretty good too. They have a menu that is Disney’s version of authentic Irish fare. We had their take on pigs in a blanket for an appetizer (12 in 1 order) and I ordered the bangers and mash for my main course. To drink I had the Irish beer flight consisting of four 3oz. purs of Irish beers. Everything paired very well together. For desert I had the bread pudding. If you visit Raglad Road you owe it to yourself to forget about carbs and your calorie intake and feed your soul with this one! It’s a heavenly take on a comforting desert served with 2 sauces. A caramel sauce and a creme sauce that doesn’t matter because the caramel is where it’s at!
The music doesn’t start until 9pm so we had an hour or so to walk around and take in Downtown Disney. We visited all the tourist shops and looked at many items you’d expect to find in a place like this. There was Disney memoribilia, blown glass, T shirts all saying where you were, etc. There is a cigar shop there. It’s called Sosa cigars. The selection is okay. The prices are high but not crazy for being at Disney. The only complaint I had about Sosa was the fact that they had a guy standing in the humidor just watching you. While I understand the need to protect their stock, the guy could’ve at least acted like he was there to help you pick out a fine cigar as opposed to just seeming like he was watching you to make sure you didn’t steal. I left without purchasing anything. I was looking for a nice 3 cigar case since I had forgotten to bring one of mine but there selection of accessories was lacking to say the least. They did have 2 chairs for patrons to sit down but the space felt cramped and uninviting. We now headed back to hear the music. The band was great, as usual and the dancing was fun to watch. Many patrons clap or bang their pint on the table to the beat. Children dance around trying to imitate the folk dancer. The vibe really does make you wish you were in the land of leprachauns with a pint of Guinness. We headed back a couple hours later with our bellies full and our spirits high. I think I was liking being a tourist….

More to come as we get into day 2 and 3….

Do What You Love – Designer Philip Gorrivan

Life is too short; do what you love. New York City self-taught designer, Philip Gorrivan does just that. Before designing, Gorrivan worked at Hearst Magazines, an Internet start-up and a venture capital of sorts. The tragedy of 9/11 made a profound impact on him and he then decided to do what he loved – interior design. And aren’t we glad he did!

Here’s a tour of his beautiful NYC home as seen in an interview with Gorrivan in New York Social Diary last year. The first photo (above) is of Gorrivan’s living room with a rich color palette of chocolate browns and golden yellows. I want that gorgeous glass top and gilded base coffee table!

The beautiful Duncan Phyfe sofa is upholstered in a Clarence House striped silk – it’s a family antique from Maine and looks stunning in front of the staircase original to the apartment.

This colorful and eclectic room serves multiple purposes – it’s a dining room when the family is entertaining and a family room when not. The Hexagon Dining Table is one of Gorrivan’s designs and it expands into an octagon when open, seating ten. I love the color and texture variation on the Jansen Dining Chairs – upholstered in Kidd Leather from Edelman and leaf motif embroidery by Elitis.

The sweet banquette is covered in Bergamo multi-striped velvet and the lovely wallcoverings are custom tinted by China Seas.

The master bedroom is my favorite room in the apartment and I originally saw it on Erin’s blog – House of Turquoise. It’s richly sophisticated, but not stuffy. The color palette sets a soothing, tranquil tone. The chocolate brown tufted headboard looks great with the complimenting lavender tufted bench at the foot of the bed. The muted turquoise seagrass wallcovering is extraordinary.

This chaise – in the style of Jean Pascaud – is Gorrivan’s favorite reading nook.

The daughter’s bedroom is fit for a princess. The soft pink amp; white stripes in the canopy, bedding and Roman shade look great with the contrasting bold brown amp; white houndstooth bedskirt and rollneck pillow.

The focal point of Gorrivan’s young son’s room is the gorgeous 18th century French bed framed by a beautiful striped canopy. I’ve never seen a canopy in a little boy’s room, but it looks fabulous here.

Hip, hip, hooray – it’s almost Friday – check out Hooked on Houses. Now go do what you love.

From the Warp : Soul Drinker

(Click for larger version)

Here are the finished pics of my latest commission, Sarpedon. I think this is perhaps my most involved conversion to date and it taught me a good deal about building models.

(Click on image for larger version)

(Click on image for larger version)

(Click on image for larger version)

And here’s a picture with his bionic arm removed. This was one of the biggest challenges with this model… making it removeable so it could be used as a wound counter was a great idea and I knew I had to figure out how to make it work.

Here’s a close up of the freehand I did on his right shoulder pad. The only places I did any “drawing” were here and on the front of his tabard.

Thanks to everyone who commented on this project as I went along, I appreciate all the support guys.

- Ron
